Born in 2000, Lara Lessmann, has been regarded as the next best thing in German BMX Freestyle Park for some time and in 2017 and 18 she reached the top. Lara won silver at the 2017 Urban Cycling World Championships, in Chengdu (CHN). Then in 2018, she competed in all four BMX Freestyle Park World Cups on the UCI – and podiumed in all four, including a victory at the final in Chendgu. Consequentially, she came in second in the overall ranking. In addition, she won a gold medal in the mixed category at the Youth Olympic Games, in Buenos Aires. The icing on the cake was when German mag Freedom BMX crowned Lara 2018 Park Rider Of The Year. She is one of the best female BMX riders with clean tricks and trick combos during her runs. That alone makes her performance in the women’s heats something special.
Lara’s career began with a lottery win and her grandparents buying their then nine-year-old granddaughter a BMX bike with the proceeds. Her brother took her to the local BMX park “Schlachthof”, in Flensburg, and she was immediately hooked. In the company of the Schlachthof crew, she entered contests all over Germany, where she held her own against the male competition. Today, Lara lives in Berlin where she practices at the infamous Mellow Park as part of the German Olympic BMX selection. Now she is set to achieve her next big goal: the Summer Olympics 2020 in Tokyo!
